Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between Lifetime Finishes, Living Finishes and Standard Finishes?

Lifetime Finishes (PVD) create a surface highly resistant to the effects of weather and normal wear and tear, including coastal conditions. Available in Polished Brass (003), Satin Brass (044), Polished Nickel (055), Satin Nickel (056) and Graphite Nickel (076).

Living Finishes are designed to evolve over time., adding character to your hardware. Please note that these finishes are not covered by Baldwin's finish warranty, as their natural transformation is an integral part of their charm. Living finishes will change according to outside factors such as oils in your hands, frequency of use and environment and will vary over time. Available in Non-Lacquered Brass (031), Vintage Brass (033), Oil Rubbed Bronze (102), Distressed Oil Rubbed Bronze (402).

Standard Finishes have a lacquer coating and exhibit variations in luster, hue and appearance due to the artisanal intricacies involved in the final finishes stages. 1 year warranty on standard finishes. Available in Satin Brass & Black (050), Satin Brass & Brown (060), Venetian Bronze (112), Satin Black (190), Polished Chrome (260).

  • Do the finishes in the different collections match?

In most cases, yes. This is driven by the finish code. If the finish code is the same for a finish that is available in both the Estate and Reserve lines, it will match.

  • How should the Oil Rubbed Bronze finish be maintained?

Occasionally apply light machine oil to deepen the color and sheen of the untouched portions of the product. Coat the metal parts with oil and let it stand for a few minutes, then gently dab off (do not rub) , the excess with a clean cloth.

Never use abrasives, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals to clean your products. The purpose of the oil rubbed bronze finish is to patina overtime. Over time the oxidation will be worn away in those areas that are touched by the hand and reveal pleasing copper alloy tones. Areas that are not touched will remain the same in appearance as long as the finish is maintained. The general look of well maintained oil rubbed bronze is one of the most beautiful and practical hardware finishes available today.

  • How should I clean my hardware?

For the majority of our finishes, we suggest using warm, soapy water and then towel-dry the hardware.
